Tunisian Coast Guard Recovers 19 Bodies Near Mahdia and Sfax

In a statement released by the Tunisian Coast Guard, a heartbreaking discovery was made as 19 lifeless bodies were found near the port cities of Mahdia and Sfax, Tunisia’s second largest city.

These bodies were recovered on Tuesday off the coast of Tunisia, a prominent departure point for individuals attempting to cross the treacherous Mediterranean Sea in search of a better life in Europe.

According to African News, over 49,000 people have already made the dangerous sea voyage to Europe this year, with more than 7,000 coming from Tunisia to Italy alone. Tragically, many others have attempted the journey, including thousands intercepted by North African authorities and an estimated 473 who are believed to be either missing or deceased, as reported by the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration.

Despite the evident dangers, migrants persist in their attempts to travel by boat from countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, aiming for destinations like Italy, Greece, Malta, and Spain’s Canary Islands.

In response to this devastating situation, Tunisian authorities have taken action. On Tuesday, they announced the arrest of five alleged smugglers who will face charges of human trafficking. If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in prison.
