Supreme Islamic Council meets Imams to discusses unity amongst Muslims


The administrative of the Supreme Islamic Council (SIC) on Sunday met with over 100 Imams of Kombo North to discuss unity amongst Imams and Muslims in the region and across the Gambia.   This is the first time such a meeting is been convened since the establishment of the Supreme Islamic Council.

The meeting was held at the Latriya Central Masjid which was aimed to strengthen unity and collaboration between the Islamic scholars, to activate the role of districts and regional committees of the Gambia Supreme Council and strengthening ties between Imams in the regions.

The objectives of the meeting include strengthening the link between the executive committee of the Council and the district and regional committees.

Also aimed to discuss and determine the strategies and activities required for Islamic education, advocacy and Imam-ship in the districts and to study ways to bring in financial resources for financing Islamic projects in the districts.

Other topics discussed include the role of Imams in the society, capacity building and motivation for Imams, organization of Masjids and resource mobilization activities among others.

Speaking at the occasion, Alhagie Essa Darboe, the president of the Supreme Islamic Council revealed their intention to decentralizing their responsibilities by having sub-committees in Saneh-Mentereng, Old Youndum and Busumballa Constituency in Kmobo North.

For his part, Latriya Alkalo, Ebrima Darboe revealed that all their efforts was focused on how Muslims would be one family with the same voice.

“It is only us Muslims who can teach one another, support and advice one another for our own good and in the interest of the nation. We need peace, obedient and respect. Being a Muslim should not be in the form of lip singing but rather, it should reflect from our hearts,” he said.

He thanked the Supreme Islamic Council for the initiative likewise for choosing Latriya for the meeting ground.  

Alhagie Muhammdu Salieu Jallow, the Imam Ratib of Latriya Central Masjid welcomed the gesture with appreciations to the initiative.

For his part, Oustass Samba M. Bah, president of the Imams of Kombo North thanked the Supreme Islamic Council for their foresights.

For his part, Samba-Binta Bah, Councilor for Jabbang Ward, he urged the SIC to empower the Imams to effectively execute their roles in leading their congregations and other affairs related to social engagements in their neighborhoods. He further urged the young ones to obey their parents and religious leaders with utmost respect.

However, the SIC previously held a similar meeting in Kombo South which intends to reach to all the regions in the Gambia.
