Senior Revenue Collector Confesses to Misusing D56,000 in Brikama Area Council’s Accounts

Foday Krubally, a Senior Revenue Collector at the Brikama Area Council (BAC), has admitted to misusing a sum of D56,000 instead of depositing it into the Council’s accounts. In 2018, he was responsible for collecting revenues from valued properties in Kerr Sering, and he claimed to have deposited the funds into one of the Brikama Area Council’s accounts at GTBank, Trust Bank, or EcoBank.

However, Foday mentioned that his 2018 cash book was given to the internal audit unit for auditing, and he hasn’t had access to it since then. He did repay the money after an audit query, explaining that he took a loan from the credit union to do so.

During the examination, Foday provided his cash book covering the periods from 2020 to 2024. He was questioned about a collection amounting to D41,000, and he accepted the audit finding that he did not deposit the money. He admitted, “It is difficult to be honest towards money. I know I have collected and, definitely, I have misused it.”

Another audit query was raised regarding D21,000, but Foday clarified that the amount was actually D15,000. He acknowledged that he hadn’t paid the money yet but assured the panel that he would do so very soon. When asked about the timeline for payment, Foday responded, “I will pay very soon.”

The Chairperson, Jainaba Bah, intervened and ordered Foday to deposit the money into the account of the Brikama Area Council by Thursday, March 28, 2024, and provide evidence of payment. Counsel Patrick Gomez questioned Foday about the ease of collecting revenue and using it for personal affairs. Foday admitted to using the money without informing anyone and expressed his determination to rectify himself.

Foday also disclosed that he didn’t regularly go for weekly reconciliation at the internal audit unit. When asked why, he explained that sometimes unexpected problems arise, and he ends up using the money. Counsel Gomez pointed out the number of times Foday failed to submit to the internal audit unit.

The veteran revenue collector, Foday Krubally, is expected to reappear for further examination on his own cash book to account for the collections he made. It’s worth noting that Foday previously served the Kuntaur Area Council from 1995 to 1994 before joining the Brikama Area Council.
