Senegalese Authorities Bans Gathering For Sonko’s Inauguration

Opponent party leader Ousman Sonko’s rally scheduled for Saturday has been banned by Senegalese Authorities, according to an official statement release on Thursday.

The rally organized for July 15th was to officially nominate Mr. Ousman Sonko as his party’s candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election, even though Sonko is deemed to be ineligible since his recent conviction.

A supporter of Opposition Ousman Sonko says the inauguration of their candidate would be held on Saturday at the Amadou Barry Stadium in Guediawaye in the Dakar Suburbs and not on the public road.

Al Hassan Sall, Governor of Dakar quotes “There are indications that these gatherings constitute real risk of disturbing public order”.

He further says individuals had attacked public and private property, businesses and other facilities during a demonstration called on by Ousman Sonko in early June.

Ousman Sonko the fiercest and most critic opponent of President Macky Sall, who is suppose to turn 49 on Saturday was sentenced a month ago to two years in prison for corruption of youth. He has been blocked by Security Forces at his home in Dakar, ‘Kidnapped’ according to him, in May.

This sentence led to the most serious unrest in Senegal in early June. This led to 16 deaths according to Authorities, but about 30 according to the opposition.

The PASTEF leader about a week ago promised ‘indescribable chaos’ if he is prevented from being a candidate in the next Presidential Election.
