President Barrow Launches SOS Children’s Village Five Year Strategic Plan & Youth Development & Employability Project (Youthcan)

President Adama Barrow on 25th September 2023 launched the SOS Children’s Village Five Year Strategic Plan & the Youth Development & Employability Project (Youthcan) at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center in Bijilo.

During the event, President Barrow  revealed that the SOS Children’s Village in the Gambia has partnered with the Government for over 40 years and that the institution have been complimenting Government’s efforts further by supporting vulnerable young people and families by making them happy and self-reliable.

He further highlighted that through the Ministry of Youth and sport, progress has been made in creating job opportunities and prospects for Gambian Youths.

Mr Jean-Pierre Kouamin, the National Director of SOS Children’s Village said as a child right and youth development advocate their vision is to be the most responsive Organization enabling Children and young people to strive in their communities and realize their potential as change makers in the Country.

He further stated that they put together the strategy to contemplate that Children and young people are independent and positive agents of change in their families and all over the Country by the end of 2027. 

Omar Sohna a young Man who was a part of the SOS Family life care since 1983 highlighted that he knew the SOS village as his only Family and he got a lot of support from there through Vocational Training and Capacity Building, which aided him in opening a workshop in kanifing where he is training 20 other people.

Youth Development & Employability Project (Youthcan) is a global partnership between S0S Children’s Villages and the private sector which empowers young people who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing it by helping them transition to independence.

This is a 5 year strategy plan that was put together and implemented by the SOS Children’s Village to change the lives of various young people by the end of 2027.

One of their strategy outcomes involves young people being independent and positive contributors in their communities.
