Mayor Bensouda Promises More Projects to be Inaugurated this Year by KETP

The Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council Talib Ahmed Bensouda yesterday 29th February, upon receiving the donations of waste management materials from the Kanifing Environmental Transformation Program (KETP) which is led by him (Talib), during his speech promises that the KETP project has just began its work and that within this year they will launch 7 transfer Stations in the communities and will also install a way bridge for Bakoteh dump site.

Adding that the council is applying for more grants and partnerships with 3 organizations to bring a solution to Bakoteh dumpsite for a transfer station, a land field and among others.

Mayor Bensouda further emphasize that waste management has always been a challenge for the country especially within the Kanifing Municipality, adding that KMC is the most populated region in the country and has the highest amount of waste generated per square meter, and posses a challenge which includes; daily littering, dumped areas around the river and among others.

Mr Bensouda highlighted that when he came into office he had zero resources especially the waste management but he said today KMC is one of the strongest Municipality in the sub region as far as waste management capacity. Adding that KMC boosted over 30 service vehicles which is the first of its kind in the Gambia.

Mr Bensouda concluded by declaring war on waste management because the council will relentlessly fight to the very end for KMC to become waste free.

Meanwhile, the equipment donated to the KMC in the event includes; 700 waste bins, 2 waste trucks, 5 motorcycles, 1 tricycles and 2 lawn mowers.

This equipment is said to significantly improve waste collection service by a way of eradicating the illegal dumpsites and as well as increase revenue to sustain and improve service to the people they serve.

Moving on, the Director of Admin at the KMC Jaja Cham, during his speech, said that the KMC staff are almost everywhere within the community to collect waste and that the equipment are available as the logistics that will help the people to make sure that it meets the services demand by the people. He thanked all the Council members and the chairman for coming up with this initiative to make a total transformation in the Gambia.

The Mbalit Project Manager at the Kanifing Municipality, Bakary B. Darboe said that the equipment will indeed support both the mbalit unit and as well as the environmental sanitation unit in addressing some of the waste collection problems that the (units) is facing, adding that it will also compliment their collective strive in combating and eradicating all the illegal dumps within the Municipality.

Mr Darboe stated that the intent is not only timely but strategic in which he said the equipment will significantly discriminate against the dumping that is currently taking place in some parts of the communities particularly those living closer to the river side such as Ebo Town and New Jeshwang.

The Mbalit Manager concluded that the skip bins and the six wheel trucks will definitely support the current work pressure of the Environment and sanitation which they are currently facing, and that it will reduce the backblock of waste on the highway and roadsides. He challenges everyone and himself particularly for those who will be charged with the responsibility to handle the equipment and ensure that they are properly handled, durable and serves as its purpose.

The Project Manager and Director of service from Kanifing Enviromental Transformation Program (KETP) Lamin Sanyang, stated that he wants to ensure that the council maximizes the usage of the equipment and that he wishes the country would assist them to develop the zero waste management Strategy.

Mr Sanyang further stated that they have also planted more than one hundred thousand trees, mostly mangrove and online radio called, KMC hour, and other development activities, in which he said they reaffirm their commitment in fostering cleaner, safer and most sustainable future for all and together to make a tangible difference in the community and pave a way for brighter future.

The General Manager for Espace Motors Ousman Kebbeh, said that the Kanifing Municipality is clean and the local dumping has reduce now thanks to innovation, which he said needs to continue, he further thanked the government for its vision For making sure that KMC becomes waste free within the sub region.
