KMC Mayor Appeals “Aid For Flood Victims”

Following 20hrs continual rain from 30th to 31st July, The Kanifing Municipality Mayor has appealed for help for the almost 15, 000 people affected in the municipality by the recent flood that hit the country.

In a televised statement Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda appealed that the loss has been tremendous and he will require all Gambian entities, commercial bodies to come to the support of the people of the municipality and the greater Banjul area at large.

He said as a Mayor he appeals to everybody who is able to help with  food items, clothing items, building materials, mattresses, any items they believe can help,to please take this to their aid at the municipality

He went further to disclose details of the findings by Kanifing Municipal Council  on the impact of the natural disaster and said that 1378 households were affected and In the households affected, 14,895 people have suffered losses of one kind or the other.

He also highlighted the mitigation efforts the council is exploring to lessen the effects of the flood on the victims as his municipality with its resources available are doing everything they can to mitigate future flood risk, including deploying personnels to communities to look at physical planning issues, providing pumping stations and pumping machines to enable water to be pumped out of households and said that a fumigation exercise has begun to ensure areas with flooding have preventive measures for waterborne diseases.
