Independence Stadium Renovation Faces Funding Challenge

In a recent interview, Minister of Youth and Sports Bakary Y. Badjie revealed that the second phase of Independence Stadium’s renovation was not included in the 2024 Budget.

Accordingly he said that, the sports ministry is facing a time-sensitive challenge to upgrade the Independence Stadium to meet FIFA standards. The urgency arises from the global governing body’s recommendation to renovate the stadium for hosting international matches.

Minister Badjie disclosed that despite the absence of budget allocation, the government is resolute in its efforts to secure funds for the project before the Scorpions’ next AFCON qualification round.

Minister Badjie expressed optimism that the renovation would be completed at the beginning of next month, with a significant portion already finished.

Additionally, he shared that the Scorpions are set to travel to Saudi Arabia for a training camp and an exhibition game at the Independence Stadium before their match against the Teranga Lions of Senegal.

The ministry is eagerly awaiting feedback from State-Owned Enterprises regarding its fundraising efforts, while also having some funds from the previous AFCON tournament hosted in Cameroon.
