Oustass Ebrima Hassan Cham, the Imam of Daru Arr-kam, Sinchu Alhagie has appealed to His Excellency President Adama Barrow to kindly appoint a Minister responsible entirely for Religious Affairs.
He said this could possibly go alongside the establishment of the Ministry Responsible mainly for religious affairs in the country. He made this appeal on Saturday during the fundraising Islamic conference held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara conference center in Bijilo.
The fundraising conference was organized by Muhammad Yadalieu English Arabic School (MYEAS) which was aimed at addressing the pressing need for additional classrooms at their school due to the growing number of admissions in both the Lower and Upper Basic School.
The event was under the themes “the significance of spending in the cause of Islam” and “the importance of Islamized education.”

Imam Cham, who is a board member of Muhammad Yadalieu English Arabic School further appealed with the need for President Barrow to consider such an appointment to entirely responsible for only religious affairs, giving consideration that the country is with a population about 90% of Muslims.
He said that he has understood that there has been the Ministry of Land, Local Government and Religious Affairs, but said that they would appeal for the president to come up with this ministry and its head which is separate from been associated with Lands, local government, sports and so on.
Imam Cham who also chaired the occasion revealed that the Gambia is endowed with people who are vastly knowledgeable both in the Islamic religion and that of the conventional education, who he believes could effectively run the ministry if possibly established with due consideration.
Cham who is fondly called by his colleagues as “Mufti” said that if the Ministry is established, it will directly deal and interact with people of the religions “Deen” and represent them at any level, regarding their religion.
He concluded by thanking President Adama Barrow and his government for the generosity and all those who responded to their call during the Islamic fundraising conference.
He further called on more Muslims to help for the realization of the construction of the three classrooms which are currently in urgent need by Muhammad Yadalieu English Arabic School before the beginning of the next academic year.
