IGP vs Haruna Tine

Fatoumatta Kargbo’s alleged murderer, Haruna Tine appeared this morning at the Magistrate Court in Kanifing for the mentioning of his case before Magistrate Sallah Mbye.

IGP represented by Sup Inspector Jammeh, applied for the case to be transferred to the special criminal division at the high court as the Magistrate lacks jurisdiction to hear the case.

Sup Inspector Jammeh also applied for the accused to be remanded pending his appearance at the high court as per the particular of offense if the accused is found guilty the offense will attract the death penalty or life imprisonment 

The accused when asked if he had a lawyer, highlighted that, he doesn’t have a lawyer as he was just told this morning that he has to appear in court. When further asked if he is ok with the fact that the court does not have jurisdiction to hear the case and that it should be transferred to the high court, he responded that he is satisfied.

Magistrate Mbye said having gone through the law, she highlighted that as the magistrate court does not have jurisdiction to hear the case it would thereby be transferred to the high court in Banjul and pending his hearing process, he will be remanded at the mile 2 central prison.

It could be recalled that on the 19th January 2024 during Jumma Prayer Fatoumatta Kargbo, an employee of H.M Forex Bureau at Westfield was allegedly murdered by Haruna Tine a 36-year-old Senegalese.


Murder contrary to Section 187 punishable under section188 of the Criminal Code Cap10:01 Volume 3 Laws of The Gambia 2009.


Arona Tine for that you did on the 19th day of January 2024, at HM Bureau exchange Westfield in the Kanifing Municipality of the Republic of The Gambia, you with malice aforethought cause the death of one Fatoumata Kagbo (HM Bureau staff) by stabbing her with a knife on the Chest thereby committed an offense.
