Hostile Fire Kills Three Tanzanian Soldiers In Democratic Republic Of Congo

Hostile Fire that landed near a camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo killed three soldiers and wounded three others. These soldiers were part of the Southern African peacekeeping force that were deployed last year December to help the government troops that were battling M23 rebels in the ongoing conflict in the restive eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

These solider forces includes soldiers from regional Military heavyweight South Africa, Tanzania and Malawi. Reports shows that the mortal attack happened on Thursday and that a ceremony to honour the dead was held on Monday at the Southern African Development Community (SADC) headquarters in the provincial capital, Goma.

According to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), said a South African Soldier had died in a hospital while being treated for unspecified health problems. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), United Nations (UN) and Western countries accuses the neighbouring country of Rwanda of supporting the rebels in a bid to control the region’s vast mineral resources, an allegation that Kigali denies.

The eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been plagued by violence from local and foreign armed groups for nearly 30 years. After several years of dormancy, the mostly Tutsi M23 group took up arms again in late 2021 and has seized large swathes of North Kivu province.
