GTUCCU Inaugurates New Union’s Conference Hall

The Gambia Teacher’s Union Cooperative Union (GTUCCU) earlier today 20th December 2023 Inaugurated the Union’s newly constructed Conference Hall in Brikama.

The occasion was graced by members of the Union along with other guest and the of Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, Hon Baboucarr Ousmaila Joof, who the Conference was also named after.

Hon Baboucarr Ousmaila Joof, the Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, during his speech at the occasion expressed how it is a great honour to his family as he is more than happy that at least he has done something in this world, as he had learnt team work at the credit union as they worked as a team from day one.

Hon Joof further encourages the union to work together as even without him in the picture if they work together there is nothing they will not achieve as the sky is the limit.

Dawda Kujabi, the General Manager of GTUCCU said the Efforts of Hon Baboucarr. O. Joof 25 years ago gave him the naming of the Conference Hall as it is well deserved so he commences his contribution to the evolution of GTUCCU.

He further quoted “this conference hall is located in Brikama by default it is located in the region where I come from, it is our hope that, credit union response to needs of society having conceived that in Brikama we haven’t got an edifice that can host conferences and Brikama is one of the growing cosmopolitan towns in the country we believe this call will response to the needs of the people of Brikama.”

Ismaila Ceesay, the president of Gambia Teacher’s Union (GTU) highlighted how the conference centre symbolises a significant step towards empowering teachers, fostering knowledge exchange and fuelling the intellectual growth of the Gambia as credit should be given to the GTUCCU for taking their responsibility seriously by providing a space that will serve as a breathing ground for ideas, a hub for collaboration and a centre for excellence in the field of Education.

He further said it is time for government, national assembly and local government authorities to prioritize Education as it is the corner stone of any progressive society “ it is the key to unlocking the potential of our Youth, preparing them for the challenges of the future and empowering them to contribute positively to the development of our nation, if we as Gambians don’t want to witness more and more backway deaths then lets call on the Government collectively to invest in Education and on teachers.”

Yankuba Darboe, Chairman of Brikama quoted “as the Chairman of Brikama Area Council, we are grateful that It is my tenure that we happened to open such a conference centre and I am indeed proud to say that we have added an infrastructural development to the region of west coast.”

Darboe further extended gratitude to the former Governor for his generosity and willingness to give the land to the teacher’s union for no cost.

Gambia Teacher’s Union Cooperative Union (GTUCCU) was established 27 years ago by members of the Gambia Teacher’s Union (GTU) one of the oldest teacher unions in Africa, founded in 1937 and representing over 30 thousand teachers who work at both primary and secondary levels to provide union members with financial services.

GTU established GTUCCU following a resolution adopted during the 1992 National Teachers Congress on August 31st 1996 calling for a credit union to be set up for members of the union.
