‘’Government is Fully Dedicated in Enhancing the Management of Public Resources” Says Communications Minister

The Honorable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Ousman A. Bah, gave a launching statement on behalf of His Excellency President Adama Barrow. During his speech at the launching ceremony, he highlighted that the government is fully dedicated to enhancing the management of public resources. The Minister recognized the pivotal role procurement plays in the national economy.

He emphasized that the compliance and registration program will not only enforce adherence to the 2022 public procurement act but will also signify a decisive step towards achieving a digital, transparent, and inclusive procurement framework.

The Minister urged all stakeholders, particularly the Gambia Public Procurement Authority (GPPA) and the Ministry of Communication and Economy, to collaborate effectively and ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the portal.

With over 50% of the national budget allocated to procurement activities, the Minister stressed the importance of prioritizing accountability, transparency, and value for money.

The Director General of GPPA, Phoday M. Touray, stated during the launching ceremony that the transformative tool aims to streamline communication between public institutions, private companies, and the Gambia Public Procurement Authority.

He emphasized that it aligns with GPPA’s commitment to modernize and simplify procurement processes.

Mr. Touray further highlighted that the launching of the portal is a great accomplishment for The Gambia.

The platform was designed and built from scratch by a Gambian company called Zara Innovative Global Company, led by the Chief Executive Officer, Fatou Ceesay.

He mentioned that President Adama Barrow initiated this transformation with a request to the World Bank to ensure a more efficient and transparent procurement ecosystem.

Mr. Touray emphasized that business owners who are eager to conduct business with the government will find unprecedented opportunities to register their businesses from the comfort of their own homes and offices. He assured that the platform is focused on what truly matters for the growth and success of enterprises.

Fatou Ceesay is a prominent businesswoman and advocate for stakeholder involvement in development. She has been actively involved in promoting economic growth and job creation in The Gambia. Fatou Ceesay believes that initiatives like the compliance and registration program will create a level playing field for businesses and contribute to the overall development of the country.

The launching of the Gambia public procurement portal is a three in one technology system that includes the platform for public procurement organizations like government departments, business and supplier platform, business registration, supplier management and GPPA’s own internal records and admin platform.

The authorities mission is not only about the official launch event of GPPA’s maiden procurement portal but also the digital branding of the GPPA and the productive public awareness programs about the GPPA procurement portal.

The Gambia Public Procurement Authority (GPPA) is given broad powers in the Act to assist procuring organizations in carrying out their new responsibilities and with its exercise of its powers, and to ensure that the rules are complied with by procuring organizations to achieve the objectives of the Act.
