Gambia/Senegal Signs Agreement to Combat Cross-Border Crimes

The Deputy Chiefs of Staff of the Senegalese and Gambian armies yesterday 17th January 2024 signed an agreement to combat border crimes following the recent arrest of a Gambian man who has illegally constructed a clandestine mini-hydraulic borehole on the border between Senegal and The Gambia, about 6km north of Médina.

 The agreement was signed at the end of a bipartite seminar bringing together branches of the land armies of Senegal and The Gambia.

Brigadier General Fulgence Ndour, Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Senegalese army, and Brigadier General Ousman Gomez, Deputy Chief of Defense of the Gambia Armed Forces jointly led the signing ceremony of the agreement, following their meeting countries which marked the start of a great collaboration with the establishment of a bipartite defense committee.

Brigadier General Fulgence Ndour said that the committee will be the official framework for discussion and consideration of all threats at the two borders, analyzing security issues at the borders of the two countries were also discussed at the meeting which has made it possible for them to agree on the need to secure the spaces of the these neighboring countries and to jointly control them.

He highlighted that an operational plan will be developed and implemented to manage security at the borders of the two countries adding that the national border management commission has been working hard to find negotiated and concerted solutions to the various problems regarding the possible border problems of both countries.

The Senegalese army chief announced the decision to set up a combined and parallel mixed patrol and joint operations in military zones No. 3, 6 and particularly in zone no. 5.
