Honorable Omar B.J Touray, the Deputy Mayor of the Banjul City Council and Councilor for the Crab Island Ward in Banjul North over the weekend handed over a vegetable garden which is an EU project to the women of Crab Island for farming activities.

The project which includes the rehabilitation of the Crab Island school, is set to cover the resurection of the women garden which has been unproductive for some years. The first phase of the project covers 25 women beneficiaries out of 55 women within the community who are currently on standby.

The garden project covers half a hectare of 50 meters by 95 meters, which open demacation yielded about 255 beds of 2meters by 5meters where each woman will occupy 10 beds for production.

The Crab Island school which its rehabilitation project is in progress, includes overall lightening of the school which includes lightiening of the whole garden.

The garden is planned to be in continues harvests both in dry and rainy seasons to ensure more harvests for the gardeners.

Speaking to reporters shortly after the handing over, Deputy Mayor Toury stated that the project was a three years funding project to rehabilitate the Crab Island school to a  multipurpose center funded by the European Union for Banjul-Oostende link of 3M Euros.

The project he said is of five components which included greening, so they inherited the garden which used to be a fotball pitch for studenst years back.

He said the reasons for turning the school football pitch to a garden was to help their women, noting that the women used to gennerate a lot of vegetables before the Covid-19 which has caused a lot of delay in their project.

He noted that the initiaive is not a political tool but for continuety, he said that though he is soon going  back to the polls, he said if he fortunately wins, he continues with the project, but if not, whoever wins the local government elections will continue with the project.

He noted that the project will have a huge impact in the women for sustainability and through that, they could help their families. He advanced that the project comes with a drilled borehole to provide sufficient water supply for the gardeners.
